Homemade Chapstick, Lip Balm & Salve Recipes (With Aromatherapy)
71
When your lips are chapped and dry, don't reach for store-bought products containing parabens and petroleum. Mineral oils and additives dry out the sensitive skin, temporarily soothing, but in the end, resulting in the need for more and more product to keep lips luscious and moisturized. Instead, mix up one of these simple recipes in your home. Each stores well at room temperature, out of direct sunlight, for up to six months. They make great gifts for friends and family, or provide a fun activity for a group gathering or sleepover.
Essential oils can be added to each of these recipes for scent and soothing properties. I recommend no more than 4 drops per ounce, meaning 4 drops maximum for the Simple Chap Stick, 10 drops maximum for the Basic Balm, and maximum 8 drops for the Lip-Saving Salve. In the latter two, you may also substitute cocoa butter for shea butter and add a drop or two of chocolate extract for a rich cocoa-scented lip treat!
Simple Chap Stick
Makes about 10 oz (40 1/4-oz chap stick tubes)
Ingredients
- 1 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 1/4 cup beeswax flakes or pellets
- 4 large-sized vitamin E capsules
Instructions
Place all ingredients in heat-safe measuring cup or bowl and place in double boiler, or a medium saucepan of water over low heat. Allow hot water to melt ingredients, but prevent from boiling. When all solids have melted, remove from heat and stir until well combined. Pour into chap stick tubes or lip balm jars and allow to cool completely, uncovered, before sealing or using.

What types of essential oils do you recommend?
Great hub, mattie. I make mine own also. Alot of over the counter lip balms do have cancer causing agents. I also color mine so it adds a little color to my lips.
I love making my own body products, so thanks for the great recipes!
Thanks for the recipes. I'm planning to make some of my own cosmetics in the near future (I'm waiting because I'm pregnant right now and understand that some essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy).I see your recipes use olive oil, and I've seen that before, but I've also seen lip balm recipes with almond oil. Do you know if there's much difference in using either of these two types of oils?
Wow, I didn't realize how easy it was to make lip balm. I will surely try this, as I always have chapped lips. Thanks for the great article.
hi, im watebvvadasa but u can call me dasa cos thats my real name. i like making my own lip balm its fun. but what can i use instead of beeswax i dont have beeswax pellets or blocks. ive got coloured beeswax sheets and small tealight candles. will either of them work?
Very interesting. I never thought about making my own lip balm.
Love your easy do recipes. I might mention that your amount of recipe for the basic chapstick seems a bit off. I mean a cup of oil to begin with well yield by itself 8 ounces of product add the wax and you've got more than 1 oounce of product. More like 10 times that. Just thought someone might not realize and end up with far more lipbalm then they were expecting. If that should happen just put excess into a clean sterile canning jar and freeze. Use straight sided jars if you have them and most mayo lids well fit these perfect and you can melt and make more lip sticks as you need. And not worry too much about the wax and oils going bad kept in the freezer. I actually keep my lip balms and sticks in the freezer until I need one to carry.
THank you for these great recipes!! I cant use olive oil, so what is a good substitute? Can I use a Soybean oil? There are only a few oils I can safely use on my skin :P makes it hard to find a recipe that will work for me!
