Do Waist Trimmer Belts Work for Fat Loss?
By Maddie Ruud
Waist Belts for Weight Loss
Maybe you've seen advertisements for waist trimmer belts. Maybe your girl friend is an Avon representative, and has suggested you buy one from her. Maybe you're a member of Curves or Bally's, and had a fitness instructor or personal trainer recommend a trimmer belt to you. Being a savvy customer, of course, you want to do your research first.
So do waist trimmers work, or do they just slim your wallet? Get the skinny on tummy trimmers below.
Burn Fat or Lose Water Weight?
Sometimes called "sauna belts," these waist cinchers are often made of neoprene (wetsuit material) or some insulator, trapping heat around the midsection and inducing sweat. Some are advertised for wear under normal clothing, others as an addition to your exercise wear for extra boost to the fat-burning power of your workout.
However, as any dieter or nutritionist knows, just sweating more isn't necessarily going to lead to fat loss. Losing water weight is alluring, since those are the easiest pounds to shed, but the fact is, if that's all you're shedding, it's not sustainable or even "real" weight loss. You may lose inches off your waist, but that is simply due to the dehydration of your tissues. Drink a few glasses of water or eat a meal, and the inches and pounds come right back.
There is something to be said for these belts, in that they increase blood circulation to the area, and therefore metabolism, which can contribute to weight loss, but if you're looking for instant (permanent) shrinkage, you're going to be disappointed.

How to Use a Waist Trimmer Belt
If you decide to buy a neoprene waist trimming belt, you should have realistic expectations about the weight loss results. Also, be sure to use the waist slimmer safely. A few tips for responsible use:
- Drink plenty of water before, during, and after wearing your waist trimmer. If you know you are prone to dehydration, drink an electrolyte drink.
- Do not cinch the belt too tight. It should support you and encourage better posture, but you do not want to cut off circulation -- you want to increase it.
- Do not measure your waist too often. A sauna belt may help you lose inches off your waist, and lose inches fast (within one session of use), but those inches will come back as soon as you rehydrate yourself. Measure yourself only once a month so that you don't get discouraged, and can see your more permanent progress over time.
- Never wear your trimmer belt under your work clothes. Neoprene waist trimmers create a lot of sweat, which will create embarrassing wet spots and stains. Wear them only around the house or while exercising.
- Finally, only use your belt only as a part of a healthy exercise regimen. It is not a miracle fix for belly fat, and should not be used as such. Concentrate on your health, rather than your weight, and think of the waist trimmer as encouragement to sit up straighter, walk tall, and remind you to keep your abs engaged.

ive been using the belt for two weeks everyday and i run alot, I have lost a lot of weight but not by being lazy of course i run three times a day with this belt and is a boost to my exercise and it is really effective (if you're active)
Has anyone heard that one negative is that they can overheat your spine? I don't know where I remember hearing that and was looking for confirmation. I have one that I've used sporadically for years. I can't say whether it really works or just has that mental placebo effect since the amount of working out I do and dietary adjustments I'm sure makes all the difference in my dramatic weight loss periods, but it does make me sweat significantly around the waist. Although I often wonder if it restricts my tummy from bouncing like it needs to for more burn like it does when I jog. I guess it doesn't hurt, unless anyone can confirm the spine thing.
THESE BELTS DO WORK AND MAKE YOU LOOK SLIMMER BUT I WISH THEY WOULD MAKE A LONGER ONE FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE LONG TORSOES...I LOVE THE BELTS IT DEFINETLY INHANCES MY WORKOUTS BUT I JUST WISH THEY WERE LONGER TO COVER FROM UNDER YOUR BREAST TO JUST ABOVE YOUR SWEET SPOT...
I used this every time I work out six days a week. Over time with the sweating, your waist shapes, flattens where the belt is placed. My love handles are gone a no muffin top when I wear my pants. Remember OVERTIME. The reason I brought it was for the extra sweat but I realized the intensity on my exercise it holds my midsection in as I am jumping. The jiggle in the tummy as I am jumping is uncomfortable to me. It is like a bra for my tummy.
The belt works for me along with exercise and proper diet.
I finally made a choice to make exercise a part of my daily life
Im alot better for it mind body and soul.
The army just stuck me in one to lose an inch of my waist in a week before meps. which is all its really good for cuz once I pass meps it doesn't matter if the inch comes back its just gotta be gone when I hit the floor at meps. Certainly not a permanent miracle fix to laziness. as I'm also doing the future soldier workouts which are already torture
I have used these belts in the past and went from 160lbs to 140 in a month, i would wear daily when out walking and it would provide great back support as well
Hi,
I have one of these waist-belts, I use it when I'm exercising or moving around in the house. But I take it off when I eat lunch or dinner, this way my food will digest better. Great hub, thanks.
so i really like you article! It rezally clears thing up for people who think these sauna belts are a quick fix. One thing i do know, from my own experience, is that these belts do help me. Now i only wear mine when i exercize, but i feel like it helps my tummy slim a little faster. I think these belts are a great idea for those who want a little boost when they work out. But, like you said ,these belts are not magic and they should only be worn while doing cardio. If your not actually working out then these belts are pointless.
i brought a product similar to this about 20 years ago. With a moderate work out regimen and this belt, I was in shape in no time. Great purchase then, sure it will be now!
Hi, if you use one of these belts make sure you use a well known brand such as Slender Tone, they go through a lot of research and testing and if you use it correctly they will give you result. Be aware of fake ones selling on ebay and other websites, its best to buy it from a reputable retailer such as Argos and Boots. Thanks.
I bought one because I have been told about using a Preparation H ointment on a post pregnancy belly with these belts and it lifts and tightens the looser skin. I have seen the results and it is really cool. It doesn't affect the fat just the skin.
very useful info, I have one already and because
I didn't see any results I always wonder if all this belt was doing is helping me lose water weight. Thanks for the info after this is going in the garbage so useless
Interesting hub. Thanks for sharing
I love too workout 5 days a week, and I love running, So I decided to get a cheap 15$ one, why not! it puts on alot of heat in your mid section giving better blood flow and helps metabolism. I say it works pretty well. its not a miracle belt. but if your working out alot and are a jogger get one. it couldnt hurt. it will give you a significant boost. better than not having an extra boost at all right?
is there any recommended brand of waist trimmer shall i buy ? or all of trimmers are in the same in quality ?
interesting & informative article. Thanks for sharing.
Now I'm confused, does it or doesn't it work. "There is something to be said for these belts, in that they increase blood circulation to the area, and therefore metabolism, which can contribute to weight loss." After reading this portion of your hub, I think I will just try it for this reason, and follow your instruction on how to use it. Thanks Maddie!
Hi, Maddie, this sounds so much better than those electric shock ones! I have tried those, and without realising what I was doing, I turned it up to high, and nearly fell over! so I might just try this, thanks for the info, cheers nell
Informative Hub!!! Thanks
A very interesting article. I've always wondered if those things work. Thanks
This article really had me thinking. The waste vibrators are good too, but this is worth considering.
to me, anyting that does not require physical effort just won't work. Remember Vic Tannies and how long that lasted?
Thank you for your great hub and tips on this subject, I have also wrote similiar hubs to this, Great Work......SB
I've tried lots of products like these, but had no success until I started walking or riding my bike everywhere possible. I think in the end the trick to losing weight is healthy living. Well written article, though.
Great but I still prefer the natural way of exercising. I keep fit by working and keeping busy every day.
Yes I have used a an exercise belt, but not for losing weight only to help strengthen my posture while sitting at the computer for an excessive amount of time. I think we all know where that comes from. Everything just compresses and the secretarial spread begins to take the best of me. I find that using the belt helps with this too. I am able to stay at the computer a little while longer and this might not be a real good thing anyway. I have to force myself to take a break for my bodies sake. So in sum I use a belt in moderation so I don't get lazy and forget there is a life outside of writing. Now that is a very hard thing to do.
Too bad this is not the answer. Since I happen to hate exercise I would love to do nothing and still get in shape. The infommercials are always so convincing. I was almost sold on the Sensa sprinkles the other day.
Thanks for the "skinny" on the tummy belts. The animated tummy advertisements are hard to ignore, so it was great to read the truth. Writing is too easy for you. You should try it with one eye covered and one arm tied back.
We need to strive to keep our bodies in good shape and live healthily both mind and body.
I dont know if it works, but I'm guessing it will if paired with a good exercise and diet plan.
nice and informative hub, maddie ruud described by you for weight loss I will try for this belt sure as you had also mentioned how it works I will try.
I love the waist trimmer its not a quick fix, nothing is but it sure makes u sweat! I think it works well even wearing it around the house cleaning feels like a workout with this belt! Feels like your pounds are melting away gives me more confidence as i workouti definitly recomend it!
I saw the Danskin slimmer belt at TJMaxx for only $6, so I thought that wasn't too bad of a price just to try it. I already work out four to five times a week, so I am not looking to magically trim a ton from my waist. Just even things out a little. It DOES make you sweat! And after wearing it, I am more conscious of wanting to pull it my abs. One unexpected benefit is that if I wear it around the house under my sweats, it keeps me warm! So all in all, not a bad $6 investment. Keeps my back supported, too.
I've tried the belt which twists left and right through an electric motor - I think it's called a waist vibrator and that works well. Never tried the waist trimmer belt but sounds like it would work!
As far as the original titled question, no, these belts do not cause any kind of fat reduction specifically to the mid-section. There is no such thing as spot fat reduction. Even those belts with the electric shockers don't burn body fat. Eating a sensible portioned meal plan with daily activity is the easiest and best way for most individuals.
Maddie, I have asked myself that question also. I suspected it wasn't a quick fix. I agree with sligobay about the alarm. :)
Great tips on how to use one. Great write-up.
Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy ,healthy, and prosperous New Year, Maddie. This belt might help if it had an alarm that went off on it as I barreled into Dunkin Donuts for a dozen. Cheers.
I think it helps in some ways because when you use while you work out, you tend to sweat more.
Hi Ruud, Thats a good one. Seems like we'll toss the suspenders to give yours a try. Good job
I guess the same can be said for those body magic corsets that are on the market now. But it does support your back, I'll agree.
Some Waist Trimmer Belts can give you a little support for your back. I wear one sometimes when I walk and it definitely makes me sweat but it supports my back as well.
Wow! losing weight is a long process and you can never get your desired shape not unless you worked for it.
Thanks Maddie, for the resourceful hub. What about just "thinking slim?"It's an idea....only you would know what to do with it.Warm wishes.
Thank you for your research and great hub. Very informative
Yeah, I read something on that fad not working as well. What does work, at least for me, is to work out in the morning on an empty stomach.
Definitely, there are no easy ways... nothing will work better than healthy diet plus regular exercising for live. Everything else may help but will never be the best solution.
I used the belt when I was younger and thought it worked very well.
Nice article Maddie...I so wanna be a couch potato and automatically become shapely and toned etc etc :)...I wish these belts could do the job! but...sob sob...
ohhh i have actually thought about these belts and wondered how they actually help in losing weight. so this is the secret hehehe thanks for sharing. now, i know better.
Maddie, An interesting article. I never thought about buying one of these belts because I didn't think they would work but it sounds like they may be helpful along with a healthy diet and exercise.
I know it's tempting to use these quick fix weight loss devices... but the only true solution, even during the holidays, is to be sensible. Staying "in shape" is a lifestyle choice. IMHO, these products only confuse people... Exercise, eat well and enjoy life... naturally!!!
Thanks Maddie. Ciao!
I liked the article but I think we have keep exercising and take off the pounds slowly.Years ago they had slimming machines with big belts on them.Maybe it was a fad but you don't see them anymore.I wonder why??

New mom 4 weeks ago
My daughter used it for two months and it worked. No working out, just caring for her baby. It's been 4 and her waiste stayed small, still no working out just caring for her 6 month old.
